As any fan of beer knows, ‘beer goes with everything!’ However, it is undeniable that a well-paired beer and pub meal combo is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and The Local Taphouse in St Kilda do their best to serve that up all year round.

The bar has 20 beers on tap at any one time but in a calendar year, will rotate through about 450 beers.

The Local Taphouse is also renowned for its beer related events and wide range of entertainment, whether it be stand up comedy nights or live music. They are a stalwart in Melbourne’s Good Beer Week, which will be on again this May.

Good Beer Week has over 200 events all over the state and celebrates and promotes the ever-growing craft beer market in Victoria.

Justin Joiner, the venue manager for The Local Taphouse, says their chosen tap beers are hand picked by researching what is the best on the market at the time.

“Our food menu is designed to compliment the wide range of beer flavours that we offer,” says Joiner.

“Our chef, Jake Young comes up with the dishes on the menu.

“Jake has creative licence to draw on his international experience in various cuisines to create a menu for us that we think will suit the venue.”

Joiner says that the aim of The Local Taphouse is to offer a world class food and beverage experience to customers.

“We put a lot of time and money into educating our staff to give them the knowledge to be able to pass on our passion for great beer to our customers.

“A good beer is one that is made from quality ingredients and is balanced and flavoursome.”

So what are the most popular beers on the menu? Joiner says it varies but generally IPAs are the most popular. And his pick for food would be the beef flat iron, but all the pub meals are tasty and make the beer sing!
