Going Rogue: Checking out Brunswick’s newest, Rogue District

Brunswick has a new café in town that’s equal parts mischievous, delicious and fun.

Rogue District has taken over the venue of the previous Jelly Stone Café, but don’t let the name fool you, the only thing you’ll find unpredictable about this new café is what to order each visit.

Andreas and Annie Martinu, the brother-sister duo behind Reverence Coffee Roasters, opened the new café in February this year and are already seeing great success. Andreas said the pair wanted to keep the integrity of the bluestone cottage, which was originally the Brunswick home of the Pentridge Jail warden.

“Jelly Stone had been around for years and its rustic warmth was well loved by the locals. We wanted to keep the original features but update the kitchen and included communal seating areas for a better dining experience,” he said.

The subtle makeover also includes outdoor seating and awnings, so guests can enjoy the amazing menu overlooking Warr Park.

Ruling the new kitchen is former Rock Salt and Melbourne Oyster Bar Chef, Sungsik Masicap, who has injected his strengths into the menu with Asian-inspired dishes like the Bulgogi Beef Burger, Sambal Chilli scrambled eggs, and the Soft Shell Crab Burger with chilli slaw. He is joined by sous chef Ariel Musical, formerly of Seven Seeds and Nobu.

If you’re a sweet tooth that needs to indulge at breakfast, Rogue District has some decadent options to choose from, like their French Toast with white chocolate crumble, passionfruit curd and maple marscapone, or their banana sticky date hotcakes (omg), there is even the Yoghurt Panna Cotta with seasonal fruit and house granola for the healthy eaters with a sweet spot.

No surprises that the coffee comes from the Martinu pair’s Reverence Coffee Roasters, but what might impress, is there are fresh bags for sale to take home.

“Our beans are roasted locally in Kensington, which means you can always get a fresh batch to brew back at home,” said Andreas.

Rogue District is open 7 days for breakfast and lunch, with the intention to open in the evenings in coming months with a wider dinner and bar menu. Watch this space.
