The Healesville Hotel is the ultimate country pub experience – for city slickers who enjoy the finer things in life and locals alike.
If you are looking for a weekend road trip away from the big smoke, there is hardly a more relaxed yet stylish place to take the family for a great feed.
The pub has an extensive wine list featuring over 400 wines from the nearby Yarra Valley region and beyond. Plus, they have their own butcher and food store next door where they source and age their own meats for the menu.
Current chef Chris Toogood is a recognisable name to Melbourne foodies, having previously worked with Andrew McConnell at the Builders Arms and was also Head Chef at the Deck Restaurant. He previously spent time at the Michelin starred Launceston Place in London and Bistro Vue in Melbourne.
We recently spoke to Elise Le Nevez the Group Operations Manager at the Healesville Hotel, to find out more about what makes this country pub a destination.
What is the process for coming up with the dishes on your menu?
“The Directors Michael and Kylie, along with Chris our Head Chef have always had a strong focus on seasonal and regional produce, which is reflected in every dish. Chris and his team will construct each dish to highlight some of the Yarra Valley’s best produce,” explains Elise.
Where do you source your produce from? What things are important to you when choosing ingredients?
“Local. Fresh. Organic where possible. And flavour!”
What are the most popular meals and drinks on your menu?
“We love the Berkshire pork belly, cooked long and slow over the coals on the wood-fired grill in the garden, with thyme, ginger and local pears.
“But it’s the 12 hour slow cooked lamb shoulder for two that takes the award for most popular dish.
“Our craft beers on tap are always popular, along with our list of local wines by the glass which changes regularly as Director and wine enthusiast, Michael Kennedy, discovers more and more of the Yarra Valleys great drops.”
Can you tell us more about the BBQs you host over summer?
“With the addition of the wood-fire grill last year came the opportunity to serve delicious food straight from the BBQ in the garden. Every Saturday and Sunday throughout Summer and early Autumn we have been smoking beef short ribs and grilling lemon and thyme chickens. The chefs (we call them grill masters!) serve the food straight to our patrons hot off the grill.
“We also have a garden bar available with cold stubbies, a few local wines and cold soft drinks for the kids.”
