As we prepare for our chocolatey high that Easter brings, it seems only fitting to talk about a chocolate brand that is synonymous around the world with quality treats- Lindt.
A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to visit the original Lindt and Sprungli cafe in Zurich and apart from drooling over all the delicious chocolates and desserts they had on offer, it got me thinking about the history of the brand.
Here in Australia, it is rare to hear of a successful brand that is one hundred years old, let alone one that is closer to two hundred years old! But Lindt have been producing quality chocolates since 1845. While the recipes used to create the chocolate did change over the years, the smooth melting recipe that is so quintessentially Lindt, has not changed at all over the last 60 years.
The original Lindt chocolate was first created by a confectioner, David Sprüngli-Schwarz and his son, Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann out of a Zurich bakery. The family business quickly grew to include multiple stores in Zurich, as well as a chocolate factory.
Eventually, Sprungli acquired the small but famous chocolate factory of Rodolphe Lindt in Berne and Lindt and Sprüngli was born. At this time, Rodolphe Lindt was possibly the world’s most famous chocolatier, known for his unparalleled melting techniques and flavours.
Even throughout the world wars, when resources and finances were scarce, Lindt and Sprüngli continued to grow, eventually booming in the home market.
The iconic Lindor balls were born into existence in 1969, originally designed as a Christmas tree decoration. They were so incredibly popular, that Lindt continued making the little balls of gooey milk chocolate goodness year round.
It wasn’t until the 1980’s that Lindt decided to expand their range of Lindor balls, next introducing the dark chocolate ball, followed by several other flavours.
Interestingly enough, the word Lindor combines the word Lindt, with the French word ‘or’ meaning gold, embodying the gold standard chocolate that Lindt are committed to producing.
Okay, someone get me a Lindor ball stat!
