It’s a hard task bringing you all the latest and greatest Melbourne has to offer in food and wine, but it’s a job we don’t mind doing if it makes your eating and drinking adventures more enjoyable (you’re welcome).
Located on Chapel Street, Dan Murphy’s Cellar is the original flagship store that began the franchise in 1952. After being brought back to life in 2016, it now acts as a wonderland for wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs in fine liquor – a fitting location to celebrate some of Australia’s most reputable wines.
Throughout May, Dan Murphy’s Cellar will be offering free daily wine tastings, pouring 12 different wines from our favourite regions like the Barossa Valley, the Yarra Valley and Margaret River, who are also celebrating 50 years of winemaking for the region – like we needed another reason to celebrate! But we’ll take it.
Each day will offer a selection of varietals and styles created by emerging producers, some fun ones include an orange viogner from Dub Style, and the nouveau pinot noir from Tasmanian winery Glaetzer-Dixon.
As well as the daily tastings, Dan Murphy’s Cellar will also host representatives from some of the wineries featured, to give guests the opportunity to ask questions and gain a deeper insight into the wine. These sessions run from 4-6pm.
May 19 will see Massena Winery from the Barossa Valley take centre stage at the Cellar. Well known for their minimalist approach to winemaking, Massena carry a range of varietals alternative to their Barossa environment like their petit sirah, primitivo and saperavi, as well as favourites such as mataro and grenache.
Guests on May 29 will be introduced to Shadowfax Winery, a favourite from the Macedon Ranges loved for their wines that are beautiful both in quality and value. They will be giving guests the opportunity to try their unique, small batch Minnow Wine, which is exclusive to Dan Murphy’s Cellar.
If you don’t know your Gewürztraminer from your Gris, that’s ok – wine doesn’t discriminate. The only way to learn, is to try – so head to a tasting and learn as much as you can!
