The taphouse of independent brewing operation Burnley Brewing, The Burnley, opened on November 24 2017, bringing fresh house-brewed beer and relaxed gastropub fare to locals, families and beer enthusiasts alike.
Welcoming new head brewer Michael Stanzel, the first and only Australian to attain the Brewer and Maltster apprenticeship accreditation exclusive to the German brewing scene, the Burnley team is setting the bar high when it comes to unique beers.
Fresh off the plane from Germany, where he established his own independent brewery, The Wild Animal Brewing Co, Stanzel has been home brewing since he was 15 years of age, winning his first home brewers trophy at just 16. Stanzel made the decision to return home after seeing the independent beer industry take off in Australia.
Stanzel has designed an impressive line up for opening, including a Vienna Lager, a coffee brown ale collaboration with Richmond’s newest roasters, These Days Coffee Roasting, and his own take on the traditional English ale ESB; the Extra Special Burnley.
Stanzel explains, ‘the Extra Special Burnley is a multi-layered beer you can really think about. With sweet caramel and biscuit flavours and earthy, spicy hop aromas, you’ll discover something new in every sip. We’re going to put the ESB back on your radar.”
The modern Australian menu will span lunch, dinner and bar snacks, with a kid-friendly options for the early crowd and a late night selection for those wanting a feed after most of Bridge Road has gone to bed.
American-inspired bar snacks and burgers will pair well with Burnley’s extensive draft beer offerings, think sticky lamb ribs, Southern fried or hot & sticky wings and a barramundi burger. Those wanting a lighter fare can go for hand-rolled pastas, seafood, share plates or pizza with vegan-friendly offerings to boot.
Mark Nelson of Toorak Cellars and the Milton Wine Shop has curated the wine list, with a focus on natural and Australian producers, with plenty of by-the- glass options.
