Hold onto your saucers! Juliana Mare has your invitation to The Hatter & The Hare for high tea in Melbourne’s outer east.
Stroll down Collins or Flinders Street and you’re sure to find a restaurant or café serving a selection of sweet and savoury treats on a triple-tier platter.
Melbournians have shown their fondness for the finesse and elegance of High Tea, proven by the popularity and number of establishments offering the service.
But with each passing kilometre from the CBD, the opportunity to enjoy High Tea becomes less and less frequent. That is until you reach the outer eastern suburb of Bayswater and find The Hatter & the Hare.
Drawing inspiration from the whimsical and adventurous spirit of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ The Hatter & the Hare is an innovative and modern new restaurant with a range of specialty desserts that would impress the Mad Hatter himself!
Co-owner Becky Buada says The Hatter & the Hare will bring the city dining experience to the suburbs.
“We are giving the local community a modern and sophisticated experience for breakfast and lunch, which is just a few minutes from their homes, saving them an hour-long trip to the city.”
Two years ago through their wholesale patisserie business, Becky and her business partners hosted a series of monthly High Tea seatings through the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea program.
Seeing the suburbia café scene on the rise, they made the decision to expand on these previously sold-out events and launch a café of their own.
A little bit quirky, just like the characters in Wonderland, Becky says the menu offers a “bit more than your usual café fare” and is sourced from local, seasonal produce.
“Our menus reflect upon what people in Melbourne look for when they step inside cafés today.”
With two kitchens on the premises, one serving breakfast and lunch and the other dedicated to the on-site production of specialty cakes and desserts.
Keeping the menu under close wraps, the Hatter’s Instagram page has shown a few glimpses of the stunning desserts on offer. Glossy iced éclairs, macarons and the golden croissants are sure to satisfy every sweet tooth.
There will be buffet and banquet style High Tea services on offer for customers and tickets to the pre-launch High Tea on Sunday March 19th are still available.
With a liquor license and dinner services in the works for the future, the Hatter is gearing up to be the trendiest new café in the ‘burbs, delivering that iconic Melbourne café vibe without the hustle and bustle of a CBD location.
