Jalisco Mexican is a new authentic Mexican restaurant on the hip Windsor end of Chapel Street.

The husband and wife run margaritarestaurant is named after the largest state of Mexico, which is also the birthplace of tequila!

The name Jalisco also has the added bonus of including owner Ali Kartel’s name in it.

Ali has over 20 years experience working in many restaurants in London and Melbourne as a self-taught chef and restaurant manager.

His wife, Rebecca says he enjoys being involved with restaurants, creating new dishes and engaging with customers. Rebecca herself has a finance background with a love for cooking. Since having children, Rebecca works behind the scenes in the restaurant, tackling finances, administration, staffing and marketing – she really is a Jane of all trades.

Rebecca says that the dishes on the menu are created based on industry trends, as well as staff, friends and customer preferences.

“We love to experiment with cooking at home with our kids,” explains Rebecca.

“If we feel the dish is suitable, we collaborate with Pavan, our other chef, to see if it could work in the restaurant.

“We also take inspiration from social media such as Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest. We are currently working on a dessert menu, so stay tuned!”

Ali and Rebecca firmly believe that having good relationships with their suppliers is crucial when producing quality food. They often try and shop locally at the Prahran saladMarket or the South Melbourne Market.

Since opening the menu has been fine tuned, but in the future Rebecca says they plan to experiment and change it a few times a year to accommodate the seasons.

Rebecca says that while they are still new, so far the most popular dishes on the food menu are the Tequila-Lime Tiger Prawns, Guacamole Dip made fresh daily with handmade corn chips, the Chorizo and Fish Soft Corn Tacos and the Stuffed Jalapeños with Salsa.

“Our most popular beverages would have to be the Corona Tequila Shot special for $10, Margarita on the Rocks, Mojito, Espresso Martini and our Sangria made with fresh fruits.

“On top of this, there are about 90 tequilas available behind the bar and more to come!”

Jalisco Mexican offers authentic Mexican flavours, that are still very accessible for Australian diners. The restaurant looks cosy from the outside and is twinkling with fairy lights, but actually has a spacious beer garden out the back and function room upstairs that looks out over the bustle of Chapel Street.

And if you can’t be bothered leaving home, they also offer takeaway or home delivery within 5km (alcohol too!)

So next time you have a craving for Mexican in Melbourne…. Give Jalisco a try! You are guaranteed to have a good night out.
