The breakfast shortcut

I’m a sucker for the traditional, which is why I always prefer to cook my own rolled oats in a saucepan, rather than chucking a bowl of quick oats into the microwave for 90 seconds. 

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the sachet of Banana and Mango Oats + Chia from The Chia Co was as tasty, smooth and deliciously creamy as the traditional oats, which is a brekkie staple that I absolutely love.

 The packet instructions say to just add boiling water for a vegan friendly and dairy free breakfast but I added Almond Breeze’s Unsweetened Almond Milk to mine, for extra creaminess and it worked wonderfully. This is a great alternative, which adheres to the same dietary requirements but doesn’t thin out the fruit flavour.

 The chunks of fruit softened to create an interesting, chewy addition to the creamy oats. The combination of banana and mango is delicious but very much on the sweet side, so for someone who prefers savoury breakfasts, you might prefer one of The Chia Co’s other flavours, which include Blueberry & Lemon, Mixed Berry and Apple Spice.


The Banana and Mango sachet comes in at 187 calories, 5g of fiber, 4g protein, 9g sugar and 22g carbohydrates. While I love that the fiber and protein set you up for a great start to the day, the sugar content and high carbohydrates are a bit of a downside. For myself, this just means watching my carb intake for the rest of the day and choosing higher protein foods, to balance out my macros.

 I’m definitely interested to try the other Oats + Chia flavours, which I’m sure will have a similar texture. But anything that makes mornings a speedier process, is a winner in my books.
