Ingo Meissner is the chef and owner of The Grain Store, a cosy, country style café in the heart of Melbourne’s business district. While the décor may conjure up images of a family farmhouse, the food is anything but rustic.
“The menu changes approximately every eight weeks,” explains Meissner.
“It is lighter in summer, incorporating what is fresh, in abundance and most flavourful at that time of the year. I am inspired by previous travels and I like to draw on my heritage, I take some classic dishes and bring them to the 21st century.”
The team at The Grain Store use almost exclusively local, Victorian produce.
“We try to use farmers/producers who share the same passion for natural, sustainable practices as we have.
“It is important to The Grain Store to work with growers/partners where the land, sea or the animal is the main focus and not profits.”
Aside from high quality produce and food, the coffee is a big focus for Meissner. The Grain Store uses Sensory Lab coffee, a favourite of many Melbourne cafes for their quality and consistency. Meissner says he has worked with Sensory Lab for a very long time.
His tips for making the perfect coffee are “a barista with lots of experience and training, quality fresh produce, clean water, clean equipment and love and passion for the product.”
Being in a very corporate area of Melbourne, Meissner says it has always been consumer satisfaction that has driven them, with a focus on quality and exceptional service.
“A continuous growth in customer numbers is a good sign our clientele share our views and appreciate our efforts,” says Meissner.
