Last night, Trading Plates were lucky enough to attend Melbourne’s pub night of nights – the Time Out Melbourne 2016 Pub Awards.
We schlepped along to Beer Deluxe at Fed Square (who were nominees themselves) to enjoy a night of raucous laughs, award giving, giant pans of paella and other pub snacks – and of course, plenty of booze.
“The Palace ticks every box – craft beer, sports, welcoming atmosphere, and the best Buffalo wings in Melbourne,” said Fred Siggins, Time Out Melbourne’s pubs editor.
“It’s just an impossible pub to fault. They even have a friendly pooch.”
The winners of Publican of the Year for the second year running were Kieran Yewdall and Michael Shaughnessy, of Catfish in Fitzroy.
Best Pub Food award went to South Melbourne’s Lamaro’s Bodega, while the Best Beer List was unsurprisingly taken out by the Local Taphouse in St Kilda. Given they profess to tap over 400 beers per year, they are a tough nut to crack!
The People’s Choice award, nominated and voted on by Time Out readers, went to another St Kilda favourite – the Grosvenor (is everyone moving southside now?).
Finally, Time Out’s Legend Award, reserved for a pub that has “indelibly shaped Melbourne’s drinking culture”, was awarded to the Retreat in Brunswick.
The night was a complete celebration of Melbourne pub culture. Whether you like heading to the pub with your friends for a Sunday sesh, taking the family for a meal, or enjoying some spectacular live tunes on a Saturday night, everyone was present and accounted for.
